March 23 movement, sometimes abbreviated as M23,is a rebel military
group based in eastern areas of Democratic Republic on Congo(DRC).Mainly
operates in the province of North Kivu.The group is currently involved
in a conflict with the government of DRC.
On
23 March 2009, the National Congress For the Defence of the
People (CNDP) signed a peace treaty with the Congolese government,[1] where
it became a political party, and the M23 soldiers integrated into
the ArmedForces of the Democratic Republic of Cango.(FARDC). M23 takes
it names from the date of these peace accords (March 23).
The
army wing of the group is led by , General Makenga Sultani and the
chairman of the group is Bishop Jean-Marie RUNIGA LUGERERO a former CNDP
member.
